Is Having The Right Mindset Critical to Online Success?

There has been a lot of information over the years suggesting that what you think about and what you focus on is what creates your reality.  I did not really think a lot about this until becoming an entrepreneur 3 years ago.  But it has been on my mind a lot lately.  The more I read about it and the more I look back over my life and what has happened to me, I am beginning to think….yes it has had a huge impact on the outcome and realities that people face in their lifetime.

Do I believe that people are in charge of their own destiny…without a doubt.

But I also believe that there are a lot of external forces that can hinder people’s success if they let it. I truly believe that your upbringing and your environment can have a huge impact on the way you see the world.

But what I have personally come to realise is that you can ‘rise above’ any environmental, socio economic or dysfunctional upbringing to create what it is you really want to achieve in your life.

For example, I am one of 4 children, all brought up under the same roof, quite comfortable, never wanted for anything, great parents that instilled in us all good values and morals.  Yet the direction of the lives of all 4 children could not be more diverse.  Why, because we are all very, very different and we all chose different paths, different environments and socio economic circumstances.

So I strongly believe that the environment that you choose to be a part of can hugely impact your outcome.

But I also believe that you can ‘choose’ a better environment and quality of life that can also have an enormous impact on your level of success.  By this I mean, those people who

  • Choose to associate with people that they aspire to be
  • Learn and find mentors in an area that they want to achieve
  • Live in a suburb where they want to live

Will attract to them situations, opportunities and people who will eventually guide them in the direction of where they want to go.

I am living proof that this is a reality and this is my story…

When I was 18 I decided that it was time to spread my wings and see the world.  My family had migrated from Canada to New Zealand when I was 8 years old.  My father took me on a holiday of a lifetime to Australia where he worked for 2 months and I just sat on the beach and lazed around.  Little did I know that that trip was to be the beginning of a lifelong adventure into the unknown.

12 mths later I packed my bags with $500 in my pocket and caught a plane back to Australia to see what the world had in store for me.

Well it is now 25 years later and that little 18 year old adventurer is still here and although the road has not been smooth sailing, the learnings along the way have definitely helped me reach my current success.

How does this relate to the topic of how your environment effects your outcome….well the story gets more interesting…

The first 6 mths I was scared and had few friends. I managed to secure a night job at the bank which I hated and I was living in a sleeping bag on a friends lounge room floor. This was not how I pictured the start to my brand new life in Australia and I just wanted to go home.  But my Mum - who is a huge inspiration in my life, kept saying to me Pam there is nothing back here, stick it out for 12 mths and if you are still unhappy then come home.

Well a couple of months later everything started to turn around.  I got a job working at the ‘Hilton Hotel’, found a place to live on the water, I made some new friends and life was looking really good. - I had found a great environment… and my success continued to grow.

Then about 7 years later I fell for a man who probably wasn’t the ideal person for me…but you know how the story goes ‘blinded by love’.

Well this is a perfect example of how your environment can change the outcome in your life and have a huge impact on the outcome ‘if you let it’.

Being young and foolish I changed everything that I valued and believed in for another person.  I moved away from all my friends to a place that was very economically challenged,  and remained in a hostile relationship for almost 6 years.

Did my environment affect my life…drastically.

I went from being a healthy, happy, outgoing successful individual to an anorexic, nervous shell of a human being. My friends tried to help me see what I was doing to myself by being in this unhealthy environment but I foolishly could not see it.

One day I just woke up to myself and thought…

  • Is this the sort of life I want for myself?
  • Is this the sort of environment that I want to bring a child into?
  • Is this who I am?
  • Why am I letting someone else decide the outcomes in my life?

So I decided this life was not for me and I left.

Within 6 mths of moving back to the beaches, getting a modern apartment and starting afresh my life once again started to go from great, to greater to fantastic.

  • I got offered a job opportunity that was $25,000 more than what I was earning
  • I got a huge payout from a retrenchment that enabled me to buy my own townhouse across the road from the beach
  • I made a whole network of positive and motivational friends that supported me in my quest to be successful and
  • I finally put on weight and started looking healthy again.

Was my environment changing my outcomes?   You Betcha!

After a trip to visit my sister back in New Zealand, who was a life coach at the time, she started talking to me about focussing on what you want to attract into your life.  I was a bit of a sceptic but I was open to listening to what she had to say.

She gave me a folder and told me to write out in great detail what it was that I wanted in every aspect of my life including

  • relationship
  • family
  • fitness/health
  • finance
  • property etc.

So I did.  She also told me to read it everyday and really believe that I could have it all.  So I followed her instructions and when I went back to Australia sure enough 6 mths later I met my husband.

I told him about what my sister had told me to do and how I had written a list right down to where he had to live.  He thought I was mad until I showed him my list… he was flabbergasted…it was him...12 mths later we were married.

So the reason I write this article is because

  • I truly believe that you do create the outcomes in your life
  • You are in charge of your own destiny and
  • That your environment can dictate your level of success ‘if you let it’.

Well I have been married 6 years now, I have a beautiful little boy who completes my family.  I live in one of the most expensive suburbs in Sydney by the beach and I am now helping other women to learn how create their own lifestyle choices through building an online business from home.

My husband and I work together to create a loving and positive environment for our son and we are already seeing the fruits of our efforts.  At 4.5 my son is a budding entrepreneur.  He can use the computer, designs powerpoint presentations ‘super hero ones’, he has a savings account, he earns his own pocket money, he follows the stock market (if it is green we are making money, if it is red Mummy's not happy) and he has very strong morals and values of which I am very proud of.

So my key tips for those who want to start changing the outcome in their own lives are:

  •  Write down what it is you want in your life to be happy
    • Where do you want to live
    • How do you want to look
    • What fitness do you wish to have
    • Your health
    • Your happiness
    • How many children if you don’t have kids
    • If your single, the sort of person you are looking for in your life
    • How much money you want  and when you want to have it by
    • What your dream home looks like
    • What type of car you want to drive, boat you want to own, holidays you want to take
    • Where you want to live
  • Then write down what it is you need to do to achieve all of the above
    • Set yourself  a 12 mth target
    • Then 12 monthly targets
    • Then weekly targets
    • Then daily targets
    • Start ticking them off….most importantly you need to just get started (if you want a template I have a workbook that you can download from my website @ www.pammieb.com)
  •  If your current situation or environment isn’t making you happy then change it
  •   Start hanging out and networking with likeminded people ( this has a huge and dramatic impact on how quickly you will see changes in your life)
  •   But most importantly if you can’t afford to buy a house in the suburb you want to live, then go and rent one or share one in this suburb. The most important part is ‘create the environment of your dreams’…start living the reality and you will be amazed at how opportunities and situations will come into your life heading you in the direction of your goals, dreams and lifestyle choices.

Remember,

lifestyle is a choice…what do you choose?

PS.  If you haven’t already read it I highly recommend reading Mark Victor Hansen’s book ‘One Minute Millionaire’.  It is a brilliant book and will help you get motivated to get started today!

To your success
