The internet was basically built in the beginning to provide easy access to knowledgeable information around the world. You could say it was created as a virtual library. Over the years people have realised that this information was very valuable and that many would be prepared to pay to access this information.
Slowly, as the internet progressed, people started creating ways of monetising this new tool and the rest is history.
These days that is what the internet is used for (besides socialisation), to buy and sell information, products and services. Some of the ways that people are providing and monetising this information is listed below.
By learning how to monetise a website, it helps you to decide what kind of website you want to build as there are different strategies involved and different ways of marketing each type of business ( eg offline and online).
Information Products:
This is probably the easiest and most popular selling model online today. Why, because people have now realised that one information product can actually create a complete business. For example one ebook that I have created is now the foundation for my coaching business and can be created into many different products and learning modules for my target audience eg, webnars, teleseminars, camtasia tutorials, ebooks, audios, videos etc
It is also the most cost effective and highest profit margin business online because you create the product once, sell it many times and then use it to create many other learning mediums which eventually builds the foundations for your business. This is the model I teach others in my coaching programs.
Blogs:
This is basically an online diary for the different interests that people have. Some people create blogs for fun, some people use their blogs to make money. Whatever the reason, it is a great way to interact and discuss topics of interest around the world.
Directories:
Some people build directory websites with links to information on similar topics eg hand bag directory where they list the most popular hand bag shops in their location that they believe their target audience would be interested in. They create JV's with other businesses, promote affiliate programs of interest to their target audience and when they start creating a database and following to their website they will also sell advertising space to monetise their directory business.
Hobbies and Interests:
Some people build websites purely on a topic of interest to them with no other purpose but to share information of something that they are passionate about. (The original reason the internet was built). Some people are now turning these websites into monetised websites as they realise that people are prepared to pay for their knowledge eg subscription websites or paid advertising on their site etc.
Subscription websites:
Subscription websites is another way of providing information to people who are interested in learning from you. These websites are becoming more and more popular on the internet as they are a fantastic way of making a reoccurring income online.
Basically people sign up for a service or for information on a reoccurring basis eg monthly and they continue to be a member of your website on an ongoing basis until such time as they unsubscribe. This model is very popular with coaches or people who teach and train.
Instead of people paying a one off fee like $2,500 for an offline course, they pay a monthly fee and the information is delivered online or in bite size chunks over a period of time perhaps 3mths, 6mths or 12mths, or until you stop being a member
Products/services:
This is another popular online business model being built on the internet. Basically people find a profitable high demand product or niche and sell it online. Whether you want to sell locally, nationally or globally is up to the individual but as long as it can be shipped it can be sold online.
Same goes for services. Many people market their services online whether it be
- coaching
- physical services
- virtual services
Ebay:
Ahhhh the wonderful world of ebay. I will admit that I was not a huge fan of ebay when I first heard about it. But I very quickly found out that it is one of the best ways to get started earning an income on the internet. I have my own ebay business that compliments my internet coaching business.
You will soon learn that the residual income possibilities online are endless and that once your businesses are set up and automated the opportunities are mind boggling.
Ebay is a great way to learn how to buy and sell online. It also is a great tool for researching what people like to buy online. Basically you do your homework, source a product , do the calculations and see if there is an untapped niche that you can profit from. The best part about ebay is that you are always dealing with buyers not lookers. People come to ebay to spend money and if you have what they are looking for then there is serious money to be made using this model.
The internet is a great way to market your business and services globally and locally to increase your reach and profits in your business.
I mean really, why shouldn't you be able to teach or sell to people all around the world. Don't limit the possibilities, just learn how it is done and give it a go, the world really can be your oyster in this business as long as you do your homework first!
